"This year, we want the best, or nothing at all. We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's damn is the history we make today." The famous founder is standing in front of his team giving a motivational speech. "You all know our first customer was a lunatic, and the second had a death wish. So they bought our brakeless bangers. So there were a few accidents. But the only mistake is the one from which we learn nothing. This year, customers demand safety. Of course, active safety features include rapid acceleration for safe overtaking! I know it will be hard to add the new motorblock section to the factory. But before you say you cannot do something, try it! To every engineer, every planner, every mechanic, and every salesperson in this great company I say: If I can dream it, you can do it!".
Horseless Carriage is a game about the dawn of the automobile: a time when cars were invented, and no one quite knew yet what this new contraption would look like, and what features would be essential. Early cars sometimes used levers or pedals to steer and a wheel to accelerate. Brakes were not always seen as essential; but sometimes an outside spot to take along an onboard mechanic was. This early, super innovative period occurs in the development of many new product categories. Players are cast as aspiring industrialists trying to find out what features the public will value when buying these new, expensive, and utterly unfamiliar horseless carriages.

''We've promised everyone that we'd share more about the design and the rules of Horseless Carriage before we commit to the final print run size. That date is getting very near. We (well, mostly Jan Lipinski) are still working on some improvements in the graphic design but we'll be sending everything to the printer soon.
The pictures show the three main types of cars you will make in HC: family cars, trucks, and sports cars. Shown here are the mainline tiles, which you will place in your factory. Each player has their own factory floor, in which they will slowly build up their production line. This production line will determine what types of cars you produce; how many; and what their specs are on 5 dimensions.
Other offices you need to place on the same factory floor determine how well you can research, how well you can use other people's research, when you will sell your cars compared to competitors, and how close your car needs to be to the customer's ideal specs in order for them to buy it.
You can place as many stations in your factory in one turn as you can fit. Often it will fill up quickly... but luckily you get a new factory floor plan each turn so there is room to expand. Optimizing current production while keeping room to grow later on is the key to playing the game well.''
These are some of the workstations you can add to your factory. 'A' type modules form the core of the car; shown here is the radiator. They need to be connected directly or indirectly to the 'A' side of a mainline. If you can connect them to multiple mainlines, the same component can be used twice (or more!).
Other components marked B (drive train) , C (factory options), and D (after-market options) should be added to their respective areas, of course. The workstations all have variable sizes. Which ones you are allowed to build depends on your research level and that of other players.
The numbers on the workstations refer to the specs that this module can contribute to. The radiator, for instance, can contribute up to two points in range. The first point will be available from research step 2 on the reliability track, and the second at step 5.
Likewise, the brake contributes one point to safety, available in research step 1. The horn contributes to speed, and the dash to speed and reliability.
The little arrow is used to show which specs the module could potentially add have been activated/researched. The radiator would have either one or two of these arrows pointing at it (showing that it gives 1 or 2 points of range). The arrows of course need to be placed in the factory, and can only be placed when the relevant research becomes available.
